Fresh Starts, Family Safety, and Smart Preparedness: Clean Water Comes First

January is a time for fresh starts and for families, it’s the perfect moment to think about safety, health, and preparedness for the year ahead. Whether you’re caring for young children, supporting aging parents, or simply wanting peace of mind at home, one truth remains the same: access to clean, safe drinking water is essential for every family.

Emergencies don’t have to be extreme to disrupt daily life. Winter storms, power outages, plumbing issues, travel interruptions, or even boil-water advisories can quickly turn into stressful situations especially when kids or vulnerable family members are involved. That’s why water preparedness should be a family priority, not an afterthought.

Why Water Is the First Priority for Family Preparedness

Families can stretch food supplies, adapt routines, and manage temporary inconveniences but unsafe or unavailable water affects everyone immediately. Children, infants, and seniors are especially sensitive to contaminated water.

Water from taps, wells, or natural sources may contain:

  • Bacteria and parasites

  • Viruses

  • Sediment and debris

  • Chemical contaminants depending on location

Starting the year by securing a reliable water filtration plan is one of the most practical steps a family can take.

Following a disaster clean drinking water may not be available. Your regular water source could be cut-off or compromised through contamination. Prepare yourself by building a supply of water that will meet your family’s needs during an emergency.

Determining Water Needs

Store at least one gallon of water per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation. A normally active person needs about three quarters of a gallon of fluid daily, from water and other beverages. However, individual needs vary depending on age, health, physical condition, activity, diet and climate.

Take the following into account:

  • Children, nursing mothers and sick people may need more water.

  • A  medical emergency might require additional water.

  • If you live in a warm weather climate more water may be necessary. In very hot temperatures, water needs can double.

Family Tip: Make Water Preparedness a Household Habit

  • Keep at least one water filter where all adults can easily access it

  • Teach older kids and teens how to filter water safely (and practice once a year)

  • Store backup filters with your emergency kit and label the replacement dates

  • If you travel or camp as a family, keep a portable filter like Survivor Filter  in your vehicle

Small habits today can prevent big stress tomorrow.

Teaching Preparedness as a Family Value

Preparedness is also an opportunity to teach children responsibility, confidence, and resilience in age-appropriate ways. When preparedness is introduced calmly and practically, it becomes empowering, not scary.

Here are a few ways families can make preparedness a shared value:

  • Involve kids in simple tasks. Show them how water is filtered, let them help set up a gravity system, or assign them a role like checking that emergency supplies are stocked.

  • Explain the “why,” not just the “how.” Kids are more likely to remember and cooperate when they understand that clean water keeps everyone healthy, especially during emergencies or travel.

  • Practice without pressure. Try filtering water during a camping trip, backyard activity, or power-outage drill so it feels familiar and routine.

  • Lead by example. When children see adults calmly prepared rather than panicked they learn that readiness is a normal part of daily life.

  • Connect preparedness to caring for others. Preparedness isn’t just about your household; it’s about being able to help neighbors, relatives, or friends if needed.

Preparedness is about supporting healthy families, sustainable living, and respect for natural resources. Clean water isn’t just a survival need, it's a foundation for everyday well-being.

As 2026 begins, make preparedness part of your family routine. Build systems you trust. Practice together. And start the year knowing your family is ready no matter what comes next.

Because protecting your family starts with clean water and preparedness doesn’t need to be complicated. Start with clean water, build simple routines, and involve the whole family. When the basics are covered, confidence follows.
